Lower Fields

Lower Fields Primary School has extensive grounds which they are using to extend their classrooms into an outdoor activity centre. A neglected nature area was transformed as part of the E Schools project as well as development of a horticultural area.

Cathy Fowler works at the school, facilitating the weekly gardening club and supporting school staff with outdoor sessions. She also oversees the management of the outdoor areas.

Facilities include:

  • Nature area - with mixture of habitats such as woodland, pond, log piles, wildflower meadow, grassland and bird hides
  • Horticultural area - grow beds for whole school, air-flow tunnel, fruit orchard, cottage garden bed, soft fruit.

  • Outdoor classrooms

  • Human sundial

Gardening Club

Meet Mondays after schools and does a varity of tasks - growing vegetables, flowers and trees to maintaining the school's nature area.

We have perennial crops such as Horticulture area

  • rhubarb
  • wild strawberries
  • blackcurrants
  • gooseberries
  • blueberries
  • tree onions

herbs include

  • oregano
  • lemon balm
  • mint

This year our annual crops include

  • potatoes
  • broad beans
  • onions
  • garlic
  • jerusalem artichokes

The orchard was planted in 2004 with a variety of fruit

  • apples
  • pears
  • cherries
  • plums
  • fig tree in our air-flow tunnel
  • we also have mature apple trees in the nature area
